Sweet Design Company: Rustic Baptism For A Brother and Sister

By Catherine McCulloch

A baptism is a special time for any family and even more so when there are two children being baptized. Our client celebrated the baptism of their son Justin and daughter Alexandra with a large party to include their extended family and many friends. Sweet Design Company created a dessert table for the party and then designed the mini version seen in these images.

The dessert table was to have a rustic and natural feel incorporating green and pink to represent each child. In keeping with the aesthetic of the party we shot this mini version on a drop leaf gate leg antique table on the edge of a forest, in front of an old stone wall. We used natural elements like grapevine balls, moss, pine cones as well as risers made from birch branches and slices of tree trunks. Birds also played a role with a vintage looking birdcage, delicate nests and a few faux birds for added decor.

Our client asked that we incorporate both masculine and feminine elements so we balanced satin ribbon and white lace with oatmeal twine, pretty pink pedestals and apothecary jars with mason jars and a rough hewn bird house. We also used dandelions as a motif that would appeal to both a young girl and boy. Delicious dandelion spice cookies were created by Adele Schneer in pink and green. Dandelion graphics were also featured on the cake pop flags, dessert labels and monogrammed tags.

Dandelions conjure up images of children blowing on pale white seed balls, making wishes in the summer breeze. Our dandelion wishes for this family are a double blessing on the baptism of their two beautiful children.

Sweet Design: Oh La La! French Pastry Dessert Table

By Catherine McCulloch

Fabulous French pastries - not only are they luscious, decadent and filled with the best possible ingredients but they're gorgeous as well. V. Marie Patisserie creates elegant French pastries and spectacular cakes for weddings, baptisms, birthdays and life's other special celebrations.

This French pastry themed dessert table was created around a bespoke wedding cake in white and cobalt blue with trim in pale green and lavender. Each flower was carefully hand painted for a one-of-a-kind cake designed to be not just the dessert centerpiece but part of the decor as well.

Risers were covered in a contemporary damask print in purple, green and blue, and accented with lots of color coordinated ribbon. Domed pedestals, glass vases and crystal candy jars contained a variety of luscious French treats like; petit tarts, eclairs, profiteroles, macarons, meringues, verrines, marshmallow knots, bow-topped cake pops, and madelines. Also included were couture cupcakes decorated with individual roses and intricate heart shaped crests. Sugar cookies were topped with silver and pearl embellishments patterned after French vintage brooches.

And what French pastry display would be complete without a macaron tree!? In a twist on a traditional tree where the macarons are flat around a base, V. Marie Patisserie designed this cake so the delicate cookies all faced outward. It gave the tree more dimension and made it easier to remove each decadent pistachio and coconut macaron. J'adore les macarons!

Sweet Design Company: Beach Party

By Catherine McCulloch

It's been a crazy hot summer so far and the best place to be is at the beach surrounded by sand, water and fabulous treats. Sweet Design Company created this summer display table for the windows at Bake Sale's two Toronto locations.

We started with a beach towel featuring oversized jellyfish. Our palette was a splash of bright color in aqua, tangerine and raspberry. We mixed materials using galvanized metal and fun plastic sand toys with pretty glass starfish and a rattan cake stand. Aqua grosgrain ribbon was mixed with lots of raffia which was wound around every thing from gigantic orange pixie sticks to glass jars filled with sand shells and chocolate cake pops.

Bake Sale created all of the scrumptious beach desserts. A big hit with kids of all ages were the sugar cookies shaped like whales, starfish, octapus, crabs, fish, shells, sea-horses, surf boards and of course a shovel and pail. Adorable sundae cupcakes, decadent s'mores pretzels and s'mores squares made with homemade marshmallows gave some flavour and texture variety. A two tiered bubble cake repeated the theme from the bottle tags. And the most fun - a Sand Castle cake all made out of brown sugar!

Sweet Design Company: Congratulations Graduate

By Catherine McCulloch

As another school year draws to a close, some students are celebrating their graduation. Whether it's from university, high school, or elementary school, there's a huge sense of accomplishment - a great deal of hard work, time and effort goes into making a successful student.

Sweet Design Company created this dessert table for Bake Sale to highlight the special treats available to celebrate this important milestone. Black and white are traditional graduation colors but a fun way to mix it up is with accents in the student's school colors. We started with a bold black and white polka dot pattern for the risers punctuated by hits of green and yellow. Festive cupcake toppers and straw flags pull the color themes together. Bright pompoms in the background and bull horns on the cake pedestals add another element of decor.

Bake Sale created large and mini cupcakes with green and yellow buttercream icing to continue the theme. Chocolate mortar boards with yellow tassels are an interesting (and hugely popular) twist on traditional cake pops. Sugar cookies with collegiate letters, mortar boards, degrees and stars repeat the graduation imagery. Lemon squares and chocolate dipped shortbread add more variety and shape.

Congratulations to all the students who have worked so hard - well done!
